Anthony Epstein
Sir Michael Anthony Epstein CBE, FRS, born 18 May 1921 (age 103), was one of the discoverers of the Epstein-Barr virus.
He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1979 and was its Vice-President, 1986-1991. He was awarded its Royal Medal in 1992.
He was educated at St. Paul's School, London, Trinity College, Cambridge, and Middlesex Hospital Medical School.
He was Professor of Pathology, 1968-1985 (now Professor Emeritus), and Head of Department, 1968-1982 at the University of Bristol. In 2006 he was awarded a D.Sc. from the University of Bristol.
He has been an Honorary Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford, since 2001.
He was awarded the Order of the British Empire|CBE in 1985 and knighted in 1991.
Epstein is a Distinguished Supporter of the British Humanist Association.
