The Ardennes is a region of hills and forest in eastern Belgium, Luxembourg and north-eastern France.

In the years leading up to the Second World War the terrain of the Ardennes was believed to be impassable to armour, and the subsequent German breakthrough there in 1940 came as an unwelcome surprise. In late 1944 the Ardennes saw the last major German offensive in the west: the 'Battle of the Bulge'.
