The Battle of Caporetto (Oct 24 - Nov 4, 1917) was waged between the Austro-German forces of General Belov and the Italian forces of Cadorna which resulted in a disastrous defeat for the Italians. The battle broke the stalemate that had existed during the first two years of the war in Italy but resulted in the deaths of 300,000 Italians and drove their front line back to the River Piave where it was reinforced and held with the assistance of French and British forces.
