The railway connecting Brussels with Mechelen, with a stop in Vilvoorde, dating from the 5th of May 1835 is the oldest railway connection on mainland Europe. This is the reason why trains in Belgium go on the left side, to the example of the British railways. It is also the reason that the milestone wich is used as the point zero for the calculation of all rail distances in the country is in Mechelen.[1]
