Burnley
Burnley is a large market town in Lancashire. It lies 20 miles west of Preston and a similar distance north of Manchester in the Pennines, at the confluence of the rivers Calder and Brun. The town has existed since at least Norman times, when a 12th century charter granted the church of Burnley to Pontefract Abbey. The town grew significantly during the Industrial Revolution, due to the cotton manufacturing in the local area and the arrival of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in the town in 1796.
At its peak in 1911, Burnley has a population of over 106,000. This had steadily decreased to just over 73,000 in 2001 but, by 2021, the population had grown to nearly 78,300.
