The Cabinet is a part of the executive branch of government, comprising the head of government or the head of state and his or her top advisors. In parliamentary systems like the United Kingdom or Canada, the cabinet is made up of elected Members of Parliament. In the American presidential system, the cabinet is appointed by the President subject to confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

The U.S. Cabinet is presided over by the President (who is not a member) and has 26 members:

  • the vice president
  • 15 department heads
  • 10 Cabinet-level officials

All of them, other than the vice president and the White House Chief of Staff, require confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
