Changbaishan, or Baekdusan in Korea, is a mountain range along the north part of the Korean peninsula. The highest point is a volcano (9003 ft) also called Changbaishan. The name means "ever-white mountains."

Because it is on the border, Changbaishan is disputed territory. Both the People's Republic of China and North Korea claim that the mountain is theirs. Officially, part of the mountain range and volcano lies in each country.

According to Kim Jong Il's state biography, he was supposedly born on Changbaishan in 1942; however, official Soviet records contradict this, showing that Kim was in fact born in 1941, at Vyatskoye, a small Russian town not far away from North Korea.
