Chile constitutional council election, 2023
The Chilean Constitutional Council election of 2023 was held on May 7, 2023, to elect the constitutional counselors to discuss and vote in the new Constitutional Council that also has 24 "experts" and 14 arbitrators chosen in advance by the congress.
After the "Rechazo" (Rejection) option won in the 2022 referendum against the proposed new leftist Constitution, the political class restarted the process without asking the people on another referendum.
On the election of May 2023, the conservative Republican Party of José Antonio Kast won 23 seats, and the center-right 11, having a right-wing majority. also, the "invalid vote" (Nulo, Voluntary refusal to choose a candidate by the citizenry in a mandatory election) was on the 3rd place, expressing that the people doesn't want this process, and having more votes than the center-right, center-left and the People's Party. This massive conservative win made the Republican Party the hegemon of the Chilean right-wing, had a record of Nulo votes and was a failure for the Gabriel Boric Government.[1][2][3][4][5]
The most voted candidate was the constitutional lawyer and professor Luis Silva Irarrazaval, who is a conservative catholic linked to the Opus Dei. He obtained 706,286 votes the 17.96% on the Santiago Metropolitan Region.
