Cobalt(II) carbonate, also known as cobaltous carbonate, is a chemical compound. Its chemical formula is CoCO3. It contains cobalt and carbonate ions. The cobalt is in its +2 oxidation state.

Properties

Cobalt(II) carbonate is an indigo solid. It reacts with acids, like all carbonates, to make a cobalt(II) salt and carbon dioxide gas. With hydrochloric acid it makes cobalt(II) chloride. It decomposes when heated strongly to cobalt(II) oxide.

Preparation

It is made by reacting sodium carbonate with cobalt(II) chloride.
