A lake usually refers to a sizeable inland body of standing water (the term lake can also refer to a pool of other liquid).[1] One of the origins of the word is the Greek "lakkos", meaning "pond".[1] The world's largest lakes are in the Northern Hemisphere, and the majority of lakes are in North America.
