Cool Hand Luke (1967) is a memorable film about refusal to conform in a Southern prison, starring Paul Newman and George Kennedy (who received an Oscar for his performance). At the box office, this film took in about 5 times its budget of $3.2 million, and continues to garner high marks today. This movie is based on a novel with the same title by Donn Pearce.

This film epitomizes manliness, and may have won only 1 Oscar despite many more nominations due to Hollywood values disfavoring masculinity. Most movies today disparage manliness.

Memorable lines include:

  • "What we've got here is failure to communicate."
