Count Cavour lived from August 10, 1810, to June 6, 1861. A native of Turin, he became premier of Piedmont in 1852 and sought the unification of Italy through slowly acquiring more land for Piedmont. In 1859, he used Napoleon III's war with Austria to his advantage to gain the central Italian states. He invaded the Papal States and had Garibaldi, who had been doing his own conquests, unify with him. The acquisition of all of Italy was almost complete when he died in 1861.
