Counterfactual history is a branch of the study of history that asks "what if" questions to determine what might have resulted if certain historical events had happened differently. For instance, a counterfactual historian might ask "what if France had won the Seven Years War in the 18th century and thus retained control of Canada"? This would have changed the historical landscape drastically and made the Revolutionary War as it actually happened unlikely to occur.[1]
