Cyanuric acid

Cyanuric acid is a man-made chemical used to stabilize chlorine in outdoor swimming pools, especially in regions such as the American Southwest where the sun's rays are quick to dissipate that disinfectant.[1]

In spring 2007, it was quietly included in wheat gluten and rice imported from China. These products ended up in pet food along with melamine, and the combination has killed many dogs and cats. The motivation may have been to substitute cyanuric acid for a more expensive ingredient, thereby saving the manufacturer money.

Senator Dick Durbin’s office said the sources of the recent human and pet food contamination were wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate imported from China."[2]
