Deprecated is term of art in computer software which means a programming feature that is being discouraged, typically in favor of a better feature. A deprecated feature is likely to be disabled or removed in more advanced versions of the software.

The origin of the term is from 1628, when the new verb "to deprecate" meant to pray against, as in praying against an evil or a terrible force.

In common parlance, one "deprecates" a skill or talent by downplaying it, perhaps in a humble manner.
