Derek Hagan

Derek Hagan, born Samantha Whallops, (1934–present) is best known as the first American to have undergone a complete gender reassignment procedure. Whallops had lived a normal life, complete with husband, two children and a career as an accountant. Upon reaching the age of 30, she determined she wanted to be a male and began her procedure.

After years working with doctors and surgeons at UPMC Shadyside, a hospital within the University of Pittsburgh network, by 1970 the procedure had been completed.

Currently, Hagan works with the American Civil Liberties Union, actively crusading against sexual discrimination.
