Deterrence is the disincentive to commit a crime based on the amount of punishment that someone convicted of that crime will receive.
Deterrence is cited as a justification for the death penalty.

Deterrence as Envisioned by the Founding Fathers Against a Future Tyrannical Government
To the Founding Fathers such as Thomas Jefferson, American conservatives, libertarians, veterans, patriots, preppers and gun enthusiasts and from a Bill of Rights perspective, the unalienable rights of the Second Amendment act as the primary deterrence against big government Nanny state-Police state tyranny.[1] Thus the slogan of Molon labe laconically represents that deterrence.
