A detritivore is an organism that consumes detritus.[1] On land, examples include, earthworms, wood lice, slugs and dung flies while marine creatures include sea stars, lobsters, fiddler crabs, sea cucumbers and marine worms. In the Bible these creatures are considered unclean and forbidden.

And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you.

—Leviticus 11:10
