The Digital Living Network Alliance is an industry trade group of consumer electronic device manufacturers and recording, motion picture, and television studios. This group has a simple mission: to develop standards to let a consumer store duly licensed audio-visual content on one computer at home or in his office and enjoy that content on other devices on the same private network.

In essence, the DLNA writes protocols to let a householder or office manager set up a private streaming service for licensed audio-visual content.
