Dinosaur media in modern slang refers to the mainstream free-to-air and pay television news channels, newspapers and magazines.

Basically it's a critical term for those media outlets that are considered controlled by politicians, military intelligence services, bankers and big corporations, that despite big funding are rapidly being made obsolete by alternative news channels, newspapers, blogs, etcetera, that have become widely available with the arrival of the internet.

The phrase has gained popularity as recent research shows only 6%[1] of Americans trust the mainstream media and traditional media sources shrink and lay off staff.

According to the American Press Institute:

“Over the last two decades, research shows the public has grown increasingly skeptical of the news industry. The study reaffirms that consumers do value broad concepts of trust like fairness, balance, accuracy, and completeness. At least two-thirds of Americans cite each of these four general principles as very important to them.”[2]
