Dionysius is a name shared by several historical figures, including Christian saints, theologians, ancient Greek historians, and rulers.

The name is especially associated with two distinct Christian figures: Dionysius the Areopagite, mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles as a convert of St. Paul, and Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, a later Christian writer whose works were attributed to the first-century figure.[1][2]

Christian figures

  • Dionysius the Areopagite — A member of the Athenian council of the Areopagus who became a Christian after hearing Paul's preaching in Athens. According to later Christian tradition, he became the first bishop of Athens.
  • Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite — A Christian theological writer who lived in the late fifth or early sixth century. His works, which combine Christian theology with ideas from Neoplatonism, were attributed to the first-century Dionysius the Areopagite.
  • Dionysius of Corinth — A second-century bishop of Corinth known for letters addressed to other Christian communities.
  • Dionysius of Paris — Also known as Saint Denis, he was an early Christian missionary and martyr associated with Paris. Medieval tradition sometimes identified him with Dionysius the Areopagite, although the two are generally distinguished as separate historical figures.[3]
