Diversity Immigrant Visa Lottery
The Diversity Immigrant Visa Lottery is an immigration program that's meant to diversify the United States's immigrant pool by bringing in more immigrants from underrepresented countries.[1] Out of all of the people "who received a green card through the Diversity Visa Program in FY 2012-16, 42 percent were from Africa, 31 percent from Asia (mostly Central Asia), and 22 percent from Europe (mostly Eastern Europe)."[1] The top ten countries sending immigrants to the United States as a result of this program during this time were Nepal, Egypt, Uzbekistan, Iran, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Ukraine, Russia, and Cameroon.[1] Out of all of the immigrants who came to the United States as a result of the Diversity Visa Lottery in 2016, 50% had a Bachelor's Degree, 16% had some college but no degree, 23% had a high school diploma or GED, and 12% had less than a high school degree.[1]
