Donald Bane was the brother of Malcolm III and became king of Scotland only after a long struggle, that ended with Bane besieging, and capturing Edinburgh castle. However Donald Bane was ousted by English nobles however, and was replaced by Malcolm III's son, Duncan II. Donald bane then returned to Scotland after a brief Exile, and reclaimed the throne.

Donald Bane was defeated by Edgar (of Scotland) in battle.
