Edmund Sixtus Muskie (March 28, 1914 – March 26, 1996) was a Democrat from Maine who served as the state's U.S. senator from the late 1959 to 1980 and was the Secretary of State under President Jimmy Carter. He previously was the governor of Maine, and a state representative prior to that. He was also notorious for being anti-war to the extent that he frequently attended rallies against the then-ongoing Vietnam War with illicit aid from a CBS news chopper by Walter Cronkite.

Muskie was Hubert Humphrey's running mate in the 1968 presidential election. He resigned in disgrace as Secretary of State over failure to secure the release of hostages in the Iran hostage crisis.
