Emil Zatopek is arguably the single greatest long distance runner of all time. A Czechoslovakia, he ran in his first race when working in a shoe factory; of a field of 100, he got second place. This race ignited his love of running which eventually led to the Olympics and no less than four gold medals. No doubt Zatopek`s greatest achievement occurred in the marathon. The first time the famed Czech had ever run the race he not only won, but set a world record. All this occurred in the Olympics and in heat that had caused the current world record holder to drop out of the race.
