An empire (from Latin: imperium, i, n.: authority, power) is a dominion that spans a range of civilizations and cultures and is under the rule of a central power.

The first known empire was the Akkadian Empire under Sargon the Great, which lasted from 2350-2150 B.C. in Northwest Sumeria.

Later was the Roman Empire (Latin: Imperium Romanum), which dominated the western world from 27 B.C. - 476 A.D. Its eastern half, the Byzantine Empire (Greek: Βασιλεία Ῥωμαίων - literally Roman Empire) lasted until 1453 A.D.!
