Employment is the process of being in a profession, whereby an employee makes money in the practice of one's trade under the direct or indirect supervision of an employer. The economic well-being of a nation-state is often measured by its employment rate.

It is possible that modern employment may have originated from the Christian reforms of the unethical practice of debt servitude known colloquially as slavery. See Decline of slavery under Christianity as well as Slavery in the New Testament.
