Essay:Baseball story
Baseball story for use in improving reading and math skills.
Baseball is one of the oldest sports in the United States, which played during even the American Civil War in the 1860s. Unlike most sports games, baseball does not use a clock and instead the game is ended after nine innings if one side is ahead. An inning consists of each side having 3 "outs".
Math is a central part of baseball, more so than other sports. the skill of players is measured by how often they obtain "hits" rather than "outs" when they are up "to bat," when the other side pitches a ball to them. Each game is between two teams, and nine players at any given time play on each team.
The two fundamental measures of performance in baseball are the batting average and the earned run average (ERA), as explained below.
Batting Average
The batting average is the number of hits by a player divided by his total at-bats, not counting at-bats in which he intentionally made an out (a "sacrifice") or in which it would have been an out except an opposing player committed an error in fielding the ball.
Earned Run Average
