Gaumāta (𐎥𐎢𐎶𐎠𐎫) commonly called False Smerdis in English, was a Median Magi who usurped the throne of Cambyses II while he was returning from the campaign of Egypt: claiming to be Cambyses' younger brother Bardiya (old Persian: 𐎲𐎼𐎮𐎡𐎹) who was also known to the Greeks as Smerdis (ancient Greek: Σμέρδις). Gaumāta was eventually assassinated after several months by Darius Hystaspas[1]

In the Bible

Some argue that he is referenced in Daniel 11:2 as being in the sequence between Cyrus and Xerxes I.[2]

Again and separately in Ezra 4:5-11[3] under a throne name of Artaxerxes; being distinctly different from the classic Artaxerxes I, son of Xerxes I.
