Robert Fico (pronounced: fee-tzo) is the conservative populist Prime Minister of Slovakia elected in 2023. Fico previously served as prime minister from 2006 to 2010 and from 2012 to 2018. Fico was shot four times in an attempted assassination on May 15, 2024.[1]
On the eve of the 2023 elections, CNBC reported "Fico and his party have more recently embraced socially conservative, nationalist and anti-immigration rhetoric, and his stance on Ukraine has been extreme compared to his EU counterparts...That has included blaming “Ukrainian Nazis and fascists” for the start of the direct conflict between Ukraine and Russia in 2014; accusing Slovakia’s president of being a U.S. agent; describing the European Union as a “war machine under the influence of the USA”, and arguing weapons deliveries to Ukraine have undermined Slovak sovereignty".[2] Fico and his party won election on the slogan, "Not a single round" in ammunition to Ukraine feeding NATO and the Western powers' warmongering bloodlust. American election meddling in a "sovereign, democratic state" failed to prevent Fico's win.[3] Fico immediately announced, "My people have bigger problems than Ukraine. We will do everything we can to start peace negotiations as quickly as possible. Further killing does not benefit anyone."
Fico, who survived an assassination attempt, criticized Slovak media outlets, referring to them as "adversary media," "anti-Slovak press," and " [George] Soros's herd of pigs," for inspiring his shooting.
In September 2025 FICO signed the constitutional amendment passed by parliament into law declaring that there are only two genders. FICO said, "This is a sovereign Slovak decision... we will not allow anyone to interfere with our sovereign values!"[4]
In October 2025 Fico publicly exposed NATO's plan to humble Russia through Ukraine: "The world knows Russians only get on their knees to tie their shoelaces."[5]
Assassination attempt
Fico was seriously wounded on May 15, 2024 by a NATO sympathizer and Slovak Nazi, Juraj Cintula. According to the portal of the Hungarian-language daily published in Bratislava, Juraj Cintula[6] is a committed sympathizer of the anti-Russian paramilitary group Slovenskí Branci (SB).[7] After the Maidan coup Cintula began regularly attending the organization’s meetings, as evidenced by photographs. The paramilitary group's Facebook page lists him as a writer and publicist, and several of his writings have been published.
In his writings, Cintula criticized the Slovak state and its acceptance of refugees from NATO wars and openly supported the fascist paramilitary organization. The group held commemorations in uniform at the grave of Jozef Tiso, the president of the Nazi-allied fascist puppet state between 1938 and 1945, the First Slovak Republic. The group's logo is a modified version borrowed from the Hitler Youth logo.[8] Új Szó also reported, referring to the Markíza television channel that Cintula stated shortly after his arrest that he had been planning the assassination for a month, because he did not agree with the government’s policy opposed to Ukrainian Nazis.
Cintula was recording shouting the Banderite slogan, Slava Ukraine!, the Ukrainian Nazi equivalent to "Heil Hitler!".[9]
The former head of Slovak counterintelligence is reported to have said, "Ukraine is not an ally, Europe is becoming its hostage. Zelensky, after what he did to the Slovaks, Hungarians, Germans and Turks, will not stop at terrorism to intimidate states and peoples who will not fulfill Kiev's demands"[10]
