The Shorter Oxford Dictionary (Sixth Edition, 2007) describes Glossary as “A collection of glosses; a list with explanations, often accompanying a text of abstruse, dialectal or technical terms.”

What separates a “Glossary” from an “Index” is the glossary’s use of a (generally) short explanation of each word or term; not just a page number (book) or link (wiki).

(“Gloss” from the medieval Latin, ‘’glossa’’ from the Greek, meaning “difficult word”; is “a word requiring explanation” and is frequently made into a footnote or explained in the margins or between the lines of a book or manuscript.)
