J-1 visa

The J-1 visa program is used by hospitals to bring in low-cost foreign doctors. This visa program also allows foreign students to obtain their medical degrees in the United States. Under the J visa (unlike the F visa), the spouse of the J-1 is allowed to work in the United States in a limited capacity. Dependents are also granted visa status.

Under a J-1 visa it is nearly impossible to change employers. This makes this particular type of visa very attractive to hospitals and clinics for hiring workers such that they have no leverage or ability to switch jobs.

J-1 visas are also granted to foreign students desiring to take summer jobs in tourist-oriented communities.
