Jack Hargreaves
John Herbert ('Jack') Hargreaves, OBE (1911-1994) was a much-loved British television presenter and countryman. His greatest successes were with two long-running Southern Television productions, How and Out of Town. How was a children's programme where the presenters - Jack, Bunty, and Fred Dineage - answered questions and made demonstrations in popular science and party tricks (such as 'How do I hold a glass of water upside down without it spilling?'). Out of Town was a more sedate affair. Jack would often go fishing, or would visit country craftsmen - carvers of shepherds' crooks, makers of fishing flies and the like - and quiz them gently about their work. His role in this programme was parodied by the comedian Paul Whitehouse, whose character Bob Fleming in The Fast Show was based on Hargreaves.
Jack Hargreaves was Pipeman of the Year in 1969, an honour doubly deserved, since he grew his own tobacco.
