John Bartlett (1820-1905) was an American author known for his main work, Bartlett's Familiar Quotations.[1]
Life and Works
John Bartlett was born June 14, 1820, and worked at the Harvard University bookstore, where his advice in book knowledge gained great repute.[2] He kept a notebook of frequently cited quotes that later became Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, edition after edition of which was published.[3] The work was still edited posthumously, notably by Justin Kaplan.[4] He also wrote books regarding chess, angling, and Shakespeare, and died December 3, 1905 in Cambridge.
