John Ellis (1874-1932), of Rochdale, Lancashire, was an official executioner between 1901 and 1924; he hanged (inter alia) Dr. Crippen, George Joseph Smith (the 'Brides in the Bath murderer) and Edith Thompson; the trauma of hanging the last of these contributed to his retirement and later suicide.
