John Hagelin was a three-time candidate for President of the United States. In 1992 and 1996 he ran as the candidate of the Natural Law Party, which advocated the government adopt widespread transcendental meditation programs as a purported solution to crime, unemployment, drug abuse, poverty, etc. In 2000 he unsuccessfully sought the nomination of the Reform Party and his supporters staged a walkout of the convention when the nomination went to Patrick Buchanan. After failing to secure the Reform Party nomination he again appeared on the ballot in 2000 in many states as the candidate of the Natural Law Party. The Natural Law Party dissolved in 2004.
