Juneteenth
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the Emancipation Proclamation ending slavery in the United States.[2] President Donald J. Trump proposed Juneteenth be made a federal holiday,[3] which was signed into law in 2021. [4] It is celebrated annually on June 19.[5]
The name is a portmanteau of "June" and "19th", the date (in 1865) when Union troops landed in Galveston, Texas and read the Proclamation (Texas was the last state to have it read, being the most distant from the rest of the Confederacy).
Muhammad Ali is a descendant of the escaped slave depicted in the Emancipation Memorial in Washington, D.C..[6] The Emancipation Memorial depicts a runaway slave being freed from the yoke of oppression by the Great Emancipator, Abraham Lincoln.[7][8] In recent years white Marxist agitators have defamed and defaced monuments of the first Republican president who also freed the slaves.[9]
In June 2020, a mob of white leftwing racists vowed to tear down the Emancipation Memorial.[10]
