Katie Hall was a Representative from Indiana's 1st congressional district from 1982-1985. She is best remembered for introducing the bill that created Martin Luther King Day which was passed in the House by a coalition of Republicans and the Congressional Black Caucus, the Republican Senate, and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. Democratic Party leadership had always opposed earlier versions of the bill, and failed to pass it during the term of President Jimmy Carter when Democrats controlled both Houses of Congress.
