Kesteven
The Parts of Kesteven is one of the three subdivisions of the county Lincolnshire. It forms the south-western part of that county and is the only Part of Lincolnshire to be landlocked. To the north lies the Parts of Lindsey with the Parts of Holland lying to the east. Northamptonshire is located to the south, Rutland to the south-west and Leicestershire to the west.
The largest towns in Kesteven are Grantham (pop. 34,500), Stamford (pop. 19,500) and Sleaford (pop. 14,500)
Etymology
The name "Kesteven" was first recorded in the early 11th century as Ceostefne. The first part of the name is believed to represent the Brittonic Celtic *ceto-, the predecessor to the modern Welsh word coed ("forest, woodland"). The second part is thought to be Old Norse stefna ("meeting place").[1]
Administration
Kesteven is covered by Lincolnshire County Council, though the council area is distinct from the county proper. Between the years 1889 and 1974, the Kesteven County Council covered much of the Parts of Kesteven and was administered from Sleaford.
