Koshkonong is a town in southwestern Oregon County, Missouri. It had a population of 212 at the 2010 census.

History

Koshkonong was founded in 1882, alongside a branch of the St. Louis and San Francisco (or "Frisco") Railroad that was being extended through the area at that time. Its unique name was suggested by a railroad superintendent by the name of Diggings, who had previously spent time at Lake Koshkonong in Wisconsin (the word is Indian, but of uncertain meaning).[1]

During the early 1900s, the Koshkonong area was one of the most important centers in Missouri for commercial peach growing; by 1913, some 18,000 acres were planted in peaches, yielding as much as $800 an acre in crops.[2] Within a few years, though, other areas had surpassed it in production, and Koshkonong went into a gradual decline. Since the 1980s it has hovered around the 200 mark in population.
