Lee Iacocca was a successful car designer (the Ford Mustang), salesman, and executive (bringing Chrysler Corporation from the brink of bankruptcy and closure, he also purchased failing manufacturer American Motors which owned the popular Jeep brand) that he was repeatedly touted as a potential moderate candidate for president of the United States. The strength of his potential candidacy was a tribute to the power that the American car and Michigan, his home state, had to voters in the United States during the 1970s and 1980s.
