A macrophage is a large cell that helps the body defend itself against disease by surrounding and destroying foreign organisms (viruses or bacteria).[1]

Macrophage is a type of white blood cell that surrounds and kills microorganisms, removes dead cells, and stimulates the action of other immune system cells.
