Midnight Cowboy is a classic 1969 American film directed by John Schlesinger and based on the novel by James Leo Herlihy. The film is about two lost souls who form a friendship in the 1960s. The film was very controversial for its graphic sexual content, and the film received an "X" rating upon first release. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture. (After the film won the Oscar, the rating was lowered to "R" without any cuts, although the MPAA claims that it was "edited for re-rating".) In today's society, this film is considered to be extremely "tame".
