The Montagnards were a faction of the Jacobins in the Convention. They were named the Montagnards (the Mountain) because they sat on the upper benches of the Assembly. There were approximately 300 Montagnard deputies, including Maximilien de Robespierre, Georges Danton and Jean Paul Marat. They became the dominant faction in the Convention after the overthrow of Girondins on 2 June 1793.
