Navarre is an ancient region in northern Spain which became an entity in the 9th century before becoming an independent kingdom for the duration of the Middle Ages. It was frequently at war with France (usually dynastic squabbles) before the bulk of it became part of the recently unified Spain in the early 16th century.

Today it is an “autonomous community” within Spain. Its capital, Pamplona, is famous for the annual “running of the bulls”.
