Newton-le-Willows

Newton-le-Willows is a market town in southern Lancashire. It lies around 8 miles south of Wigan, 5 miles north of Warrington and a similar distance east of St Helens. To the east, the nearest town is Golborne, of which it lies 3 miles to the west. As of the 2021 census, Newton-le-Willows had a population of around 24,600. Historically and still occasionally, the town has been known as Newton-in-Makerfield.

Until the 19th century, the area was largely pastoral. However, with the advent of the Industrial Revolution and the 1830 construction of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, the town saw significant urban expansion.

  • Rick Astley (born 1966) - internationally famous singer, best known for his hit "Never Gonna Give You Up" (1988).
  • Andy Burnham (born 1970) - politician, educated in Newton-le-Willows.
