Noumenon is the essence of a thing. Under Kantian philosophy, the mind can never understand the essence of things. At best the mind can postulate the essence of morality, the soul and even God. Life becomes a collection of suppositions, or “as ifs” about reality.

The term “noumenon” is from the Greek word “nooumenon””, which means something apprehended by thought.
