The numerator is the top number in a fraction. It is divided by the denominator when converting the fraction to decimal form. In 2/3, the numerator is 2. In 1/4, the numerator is 1. The numerator is calculated when the fraction is in lowest terms, so the numerator of 4/8 is 1, even though the digit 1 appears nowhere in the fraction.
