Numismatics is the study of money, different currencies, and their history, as well as the collection of coins and currencies.

From time to time they are touted as a means of investment. However, as with any other type of collectible, they are illiquid and often are worth only what a collector would pay for them (either for his/her own collection or to sell to other collectors). As such, they are best suited as a hobby for persons who enjoy the activity and can afford to tie up funds to do so.
