Orpah was the daughter-in-law of Naomi who went back to her own people at Naomi's request after her husband had died as recorded in the Book of Ruth in the Bible.

It was through a misspelling of this name that Oprah Winfrey received her first name. This is an example of metathesis, a phonological process common in some variants of urban English.
